Law Students

Wheeler Trigg O’Donnell’s exceptional results for industry-leading clients aren’t achieved by partners alone. Far from it; WTO associates consistently play key roles at trial and throughout the litigation lifecycle. Our summer law clerks, in turn, spend their time doing significant research and writing to support those efforts. And whenever possible, we provide observational opportunities at trials, hearings, depositions, and client meetings. There are no contrived "memos to the file" or fake research assignments. That’s because we design our summer program to mirror the associate experience at WTO.

Associate satisfaction is high at WTO because we focus on providing unique opportunities to lawyers early in their careers. Based exclusively on associate surveys, Vault named WTO one of the “Best Midsize Law Firms to Work For” on its 2025 list, and noted that associates “feel valued and enjoy being able to tackle substantive work from the start in the firm’s collegial, social environment.”

Summer Program

WTO’s summer program gives law students real experience. Each summer, students from law schools around the nation unite as WTO summer law clerks. For nine weeks, they conduct legal research, draft memos and motions, draft deposition outlines, participate in client meetings, and help prep cases for trial. Working side-by-side with WTO lawyers, our summers grow through formal and informal mentorship and opportunities to observe our lawyers in action. Students in the program explore what it is like to work at WTO and live in Colorado through various activities inside and outside of the office.
